Each time i meet, read or hear about interesting people i feel good. And this doesn't happen so often. I work as an editor for the Greek Auto Motor und Sport, i race with bikes and cars and before that i was designing hot strip shows for my ex-wife who ha pens to be Europe's no 1 for 97 and 98. Hi Glenn, I'm just a writer looking for information. Like, what is the body of the helicopter called? (on a plane there's the cabin and the cockpit - is it the same with a helicopter?) What sort of "door knob" is on the back door on the inside? (for ins ance, when men are going to parachute out what is the gizmo for sliding open the door?) I am currently a student at Southern Illinois University, and i am in the Army ROTC program. Upon commisioning, I hope to be branched aviatio and subsequently a pilot for the US Army. I use to repair UH1D for Lockheed after I came home. They had a contract to repair damage UH1D from Vietnam , I'm amazed at how much damage they would take and still make it home, they saved a lot of lives. I am one of those hover impaired pilots. But with the proper therapy (training) maybe I can can overcome it. It is very difficult to fly helicopters on a limited budget.

I was in the 82nd For about a year and a half as an RTO in a mortar platoon I made it to SPC before puttting in a flight school packet. So now here I am in Flight school (BCS, getting ready for nights), and so far the mission of the 58D hooked me (It'd be nicer if they had a better airframe, but they're working on it).

Really great site, with lots of information. I have been a member of the San Diego Mountain Rescue Team for 33 years and have flown, as a passenger, in all kinds of helicopters from Bell 47G-3-B's to UH 60's. The San Diego County Sheriff's fly MD 500's, hich I'm very familiar with, but I've also had experience with Bell 206's. I would estimate about 300 flights. I also instruct our team Helitac training every year and wrote the section in our training manual on helicopters. Your description of helicopter dynamics was very good, however I have one difference of opinion, which is based on a book on helicopters and on a talk by our local Coast Guard pilots to our team. In Section 5, when talking about translational lift, you said that "clean air" resulted from moving out from the rotor wash. My information is that, when a helicopter is hovering, it is pulling in air from above and forcing it down (rotor wash). This continued pulling in new air from above causes a partial v cuum above the aircraft, which must be continuously replenished by new air. The partial vacuum means that there is thinner (less dense) air being drawn to the rotor blades than the air outside the rotor disc, consequently the pilot must compensate by inc easing pitch or power, or both. By flying out of the rotor disc into "clean air" in translational mode, the rotors can bite denser air and the pilot can decrease power.
Is this right? I hope so, because I've been teaching it for years.

Editors Note: I think the confusion is in the term "partial vacuum". Air that is going through the rotor system is being forced down, and when it hits the ground, it is forced away from the aircraft. The air will recirculate back into the rotorsystem. (If you have ever seen a photo of a chopper hovering in a place where there is smoke, you will see the turbulent air recirculate through the system). This "ground effect" actually helps the helicopter fly at lower power than out of ground effect...because the rotor wash is being pushed against the ground. The air is not necessarily "Thinner", but there is a lower "Pressure" area over the top of the rotor system which is what I believe you are referring to.

I have a friend here in FL, that is involved with the VHPA. He primarily does colleges for all military branches. Through his college work he has made some impressive connections. We have a flying D modle huey here in FL that is out of the Firelands milit ry museum in Ohio. It caters to events here like just recently, the moving vietnam wall, by providing rides to the public. This was a dustoff aircraft in nam and was shot down in 1968 and refurbished by the museum. We have enjoyed 4 flights on this old wa bird. And are always anticipating future air time. Great website. These old photos and manuals may interest you and your website compatriots. One of the items is a RARE PHOTO OF ONE OF THE FIRST TEST FLIGHTS OF HUEY COBRA PROTOTYPE !!!!! I was really considering a career as helicopter pilot but, with a family and home I just can ot afford it. Thanks so much for your page. Although I am a flight nurse, I want to learn more about the workings of the a/c we use, which is a BK-117 for the moment. Unfortunately next year we are downsizing to an EC-135. I've been with the aeromed program for a lit le over a year and so much that goes on in the cockpit is so foreign to me. Your page helps a great deal. Our program is HealthNet Aeromedical Services, Inc in Charleston, West Virginia. At present, we lease our BK from Rocky Mountain Helicopters. Of o r four pilots, I feel extremely comfortable with three and have no problem putting my life in their hands. The three are previous Vietnam pilots, the fourth is from Desert Storm and this is his first civilian job. We work as a team onboard and this work great, for the most part. Cool site! The LT (sha!, like he knows) was partially right about he OH-58C. The "C" model has a Rolls Royce Allison 250-C20B rated 420 shp (810 TOT). The xmsn is limited to 92 psi (100%, 317 shp). The Cobra is currently identified as a AH-1S (Modified), essentially a "G" model with a T53-L-703 replacing the Hueys T53-L-13B and the TOW missile system (NASA). AH-1P (Production), a 77-78 model flat plate canopy redesigned AH-1S with goggle cockpit. AH 1E (Enhanced Cobra Armament System-ECAS), same as the AH-1P but with a 20mm eletric cannon replace the mini gun and 40mm. AH-1F (Fully modernized), Same as the ECAS except for the 2000 lbs of countermeasures, survivability, and fire control equipment. AH- F (MCN), added a 200 pound FLIR sight that is wonderful, but finished the aircraft off as a usful weapon. AH-1F(MCN) in service with the TN NG. Hope I didn't bore you, but I have fun writing it. Where's the AH-64's?

Great site. Lots of interesting things. I especially liked the tale about the Crew Chief and the Jesus nut. I presently work on the CH146 Griffon, which is a Bell 412 with a few changes for the military. I just got back from poking many holes in the sky o er Kosovo. One of our crews can testify to the effectiveness of the WSPS after surviving a 3-wire strike at 125 ft in a valley. The A/C landed,was inspected, and flew back to base for a windscreen replacement.

Thanks for building this site. I am currently in Bosnia and am taking the AFAST while im here. Have been interested in flying helicopters all my life. I guess now is the opportunity to go to Army flight school and learn how real pilots learn.
